Way back in the 15th century, once you had finished cleaning up the poo on the streets or had baked all of your bread for the day, then you would walk down the street to your boss who would pay you 300 eels instead of money. But whywould you rather have eels than money?
Mainly because eels were worth more money than actual money. You might not actually want eels (although a lot of people liked and still like eating them), but you could sell them in the market the next day for twice as much money as a few coins. And also, they were animals, living or dead, so you might get a customer willing to pay more.
Just remember not to pay for a membership on Middle with eels!
