Politcs Digest January 2021: America Gets A New Leader

Donlad Trump has said 30,000 lies now (that's one every 16 minutes of an 8-hour day!) and the January 6th riots at Capitol Hill were the last straw for many congress officials. Here's all the buzz in politics this January.

Joe Biden Gets Inaugurated

On January 20th, Joe Biden was officially inaugurated next US president. It was a bit different though, with Donald Trump in Florida and social distancing in place, but that didn't stop normal celebrations. There were many trumpeters and that night had many fireworks marking the 46th President's move into the White House. Straight afterwards, he signed 17 executive actions such as stopping the Trump wall between Mexico and the US and rejoining the World Health Organization.

UK The Worst Covid-Affected Country

Sadly, the United Kingdom is now the worst country infected with Covid. The R number, which is the number of people infecting others with coronavirus, was 1.3 last week, a terrible number considering earlier R numbers which were down to 0.2. Some good news now, the R number has recently dropped to 0.8.

Senate Impeachment Trial To Begin February 8th

Back to America. Last week, Congress voted to impeach former president Trump. The 'Yea' total, which means agreeing to the impeachment, toppled to 231 votes (that was 221 Democrats and 10 Republicans), whilst the 'Nay' total, meaning to disagree to the impeachment, was only 197 votes with zero Democrats voting. There are now arguments about whether the Senate impeachment trial, which, if voted for, could actually impeach Trump, should start on February 8th. Despite saying earlier Trump is a 'danger to our country', Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell has stood strong on miscontiuing the impeachment. With 235 Democrats versus 199 Republicans under the wing, American politics is going on a rollercoaster of a ride.
