Mute Monday: How Big Or Small Can Things Be?

The biggest thing in the known universe is the Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall, discovered in November 2013.

At 10 billion light years across, it takes up 9% of the known universe.

Our galaxy is only 105,700 light years across.

It takes up 0.00011365591 of the known universe.

Now, let's look at the smallest objects. One is a cell:

There are around 30 trillion cells in the human body. All human DNA would stretch to 11.2 million light years across, taking up 0.01204301075 of the known universe.

Finally, the smallest thing in the universe is probably a quark.

They're so small that picture was VERY hard to find. But, luckily, we got it, and that particular quark is known as a 'four-churn quark'.

Billions of quarks make up protons, neutrons and electrons, which make up atoms (above), which make everything. There are about 6.3e+37 quarks in the human body (that's 6.3 with 37 zeros on the end).

Mute Monday tells an interesting story in mostly pictures and less than 200 words. A new post is published every Monday (duh!).
